Freezer Bag Cooking Cookbook

PostPosted by sirbob on Sun Apr 06, 2008 8:40 pm

Has anyone bought the freezer bag cooking cookbook yet? It has good reviews, and they were even featured in Backpacker Magazine. The $14 book includes over 160 backpacking recipes and other backbountry cooking tips. Is it really worth it? Anyone heard reviews about it? http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/bookstore.htm

There are some reviews at the bottom of the http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/bookstore.htm.

"This is a great book for those new to or experienced in camping, backpacking, and hiking.
It starts with a great introduction into what you'll need to be successful including great tips for stocking your pantry and what gear you'll need. The book then dives into a great collection of easy but delicious recipes! They are categorized into breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, salads, and desserts. I'm involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and I've used these recipes to create some terrific, easy to transport meals! This book is a great addition to the collection of anyone that spends time eating in the great outdoors! " Kevin (GA)

"The book is now a well used staple of menu planning for boys in my Boy Scout Troop, the meals are perfect for Scouts, easy to prepare, filling, and most important, minimal cleanup. As the author notes, some users mix the meals in mugs or bowls rather than bags. The wide variety of meals allows the boys to find something for everyone to eat. This cook book needs to be in the library of every scout troop." - Chuck (Houston, TX)

"I bought 'Freezer Bag CookingTM' by Sarah Svien ... and it's changed my life. Well, okay, it hasn't really changed my life, but it has certainly changed the way I cook on the trail. ... When I bought the book I feared it was just a duplicate of what's on the web site, but I've found there isn't that much overlap of information or recipes. Each is a good resource in its own right."

"The Freezer Bag CookingTM cook book ... is one of the best bping cook books I've seen...I've seen a few....its a duh forehead smackin' book, but is awesome resource for freezer bag cooking with a pot cozy."

"I LOVE this book! I bought it a week ago, but have been using the author's website for almost a year. ... My husband and I are active in a large outdoors organization in the area and have recommended the book to quite a few people. Hubby loves eating so well when on a long backcountry trip compared to those poor schmucks eating expensive freeze-dried stuff or power bars!" - "MrsJumper" (Seattle, WA)

"I have purchased three copies of this book because it's one of the most usefull backpacking cookbooks out there. Two of the copies I have sent to backpacking friends as Christmas gifts. They each loved the gifts. I LOVE the concept of this book and use it quite a bit on my backpacking trips. A couple of the items I even eat at home they are so good. Anyone that is tired of paying the sky high prices for Mountain House Freeze Dried foods will be very happy with this book." - StoveStomper (MS Gulf Coast)

Sounds like an awesome book. I think I'm going to buy it!

Wow - I just spent 20 minutes on http://www.freezerbagcooking.com and I love that place! I'm going to buy that book for sure. They've got to be amazing if they were featured in the Backpacker Magazine.

I googled that cookbook and Google Books came up. You can read the whole book online for free! I don't know if Freezer Bag Cooking knows about this, but it says 'Preview Book' and you can see the book cover to cover all 96 pages! I guess we should support them, and if you are really going to use more than a couple of the recipes, then actually buy the book. I don't understand if the company added it to Google Books, or if google did. It says copyrighted material on every page.... Well enjoy!

wow i cant believe that you can just read it and even print it for free right there. its a great resource though. i might buy the book just to support them. i wish the book was a little nicer, like if it included photos and things.

but i heard freezer bag oooking is coming out with a Volume 2 sometime soon, so it should be good. i'd be dissappointed though if most of the recipes were the same ones from the first version.

For anyone wondering, we put a 2005 era version of the book on Google Books back then. The Google preview is similar to what one sees on Amazon, roughly 19 pages and covers. The cover you might notice is different now. We did a full revision of the book about a year after we brought it out.

Book 2 is editing stage currently - it is a completely new book from book 1.

Why do we let people see our works? My husband and I firmly believe that knowledge is power - teach people and they will teach others. I don't believe in "state secrets". Many have bought our first book (of which I am always grateful!) - and well, if people use our ideas, recipes, etc and don't buy? That is fine as well - I know that many have spread the word to their friends and hiking partners :) Same reason we actively post new recipes on our sites, film cooking videos, etc - I want people to learn new things as much as they can.

Btw, Colton, you have done a great job since the last time I was by!

That is great that your goal is to teach people, not make money! I'm excited for your new book though, good luck! Do you have a date yet for its release? I did notice the cover was different between the 2005 version.

Thanks for the comment, its good to talk to you again! I can see that you and Freezer Bag Cooking are still growing strong!
