El Salvador backpacking?

PostPosted by snowwhite33 on Fri May 09, 2008 7:44 pm

It looks like my husband and I will be spending some of his vacation time in El Salvador traveling with his sister and brother-in-law (his sister works with many of the coffee growers in the area which = free lodging). Seeing as this is usually my time for a backpacking trip, I am hoping to swing something on this trip...even just some good day hiking.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I have read that there are some safety concerns with hiking in El Salvador. Does anyone have experiences that can be shared with me? Did you find it safe/unsafe?

There doesn't seem to be much info out there on hiking, so any help is appreciated! Thanks you guys.

Are you sure that you want to backpack in El Salvador? Many things keep people out of this country even though in a popular region, recent earthquakes or past civil wars. But in all reality, other countries around El Salvador have better attractions. The lack of anything truly comparable in El Salvador prevents most from even passing through. However, those who do visit the country are usually pleased they did, but would agree that any sight is low key and as nice and friendly as the people are, they are just the same in neighboring areas.

Expect to spend about $20-$40 USD per day. Suchitoto and Sonsonate are good places to visit and have some good beaches. There isn't a lot of tourists, and you don't need a visa like most latin america countries.

One of my friends went to El Salvador on vacation a few months ago. He said he would never go back there again. He didn't give me a bunch of reasons why, but he just said that he hated it. I wonder if the USD is any good there?

haha ya I'm not sure if I'd want to go there. I'll just stick to the U.S. for awhile.

Well I since I didn't get any help from you guys, I didn't go. Haha no but I dicided to turn down the trip because of some problems we had.

It was a plus that I didn't have to have a visa, but the money was a bit more than I was hoping to spend. Maybe next time! Thanks for the help though.
