TOPO Maps?

PostPosted by spinner on Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:20 pm

In the past I've used topozone.com for all my topo map needs. They were great and I loved that they were free. But recently they were bought by trails.com I guess. They look like a great service, but they are expensive. I looked around for some other free topo maps online but couldn't find anything. Anyone found a good, free place? And should I just buy some software? I'd love to have the feature of printing maps, making routes, and even maybe seeing it 3D, but I doubt there is anything free that I get those with.

I found this pretty good place, http://www.digital-topo-maps.com. It has pretty good things that you can print out if you want, but for nice custom prints, I'd recommend http://www.mytopo.com. They print them on waterproof and tear-proof stuff and they have coordinates and grids on the maps.

I went to REI and printed out a map of a trail in Washington, and I was examining the map later and I realized it didn't even have any grid lines! I couldn't believe it. I was so mad. I can use the topography, but really I can't look on my GPS and use coordinates and find where I am on the map. I was pretty disappointed.
